UCSF is committed to assisting both new and established faculty in developing and managing alliances with companies. This includes; 1) guidance on strategy for approaching and initiating discussions 2) crafting the collaborative structure 3) protecting faculty research/publication rights and intellectual property, and 4) avoiding conflict of interest, especially when consulting for companies.

The Schools and QB3 work closely with both the Industry Contracts Division (ICD) and the Technology Management Division of the Office of Innovation, Technology and Alliances.

The Office of Innovation, Technology and Alliances works collaboratively with the Business Development Officers at the Schools and QB3 as well as with faculty to foster productive relationships with for-profit organization and to secure sponsorship of University programs.  They are responsible for negotiating and signing industry-related agreements including:

  • Clinical Trial Agreements
  • Material Transfers (incoming materials of all types and outgoing clinical specimen or data)
  • Sponsored Research Agreements
  • Grants (including SBIR/STTR and UC Discovery)
  • Collaborative Agreements
  • Fellowships
  • Confidentiality Agreements related to industry research contracts and grants

For industry-related clinical trials, the ITA negotiates and signs agreements (such as non-disclosure or confidential-disclosure agreements) related to those trials, so that the PI can receive the trial protocol, and clinical trial agreements.  For questions or assistance, please contact Jim Kiriakis or Irene Shin, the Director and Co-Director of the Industry Contracts Division of the Office of Innovation, Technology and Alliances at 415-353-4446
